For Coincheck’s platform where customers trade crypto assets, the most critical elements are the User Interface (UI) and the User Experience (UX). Our focus, above all, is enabling customers to interact with their screens in a manner that enables them to achieve their purpose without anxiety or uncertainty. At Coincheck where we handle a new form of value called crypto assets, we believe our foremost responsibility is to address customers’ concerns with sincerity and lower the psychological barriers to trading. In that sense, UI/UX is not only a product priority, but also a core part of our competitive strategy.
When designing UI/UX in-house, we foster an environment where team members with diverse backgrounds can discuss ideas on equal footing, rigorously and logically pursuing “clarity.” To deepen user insight, we conduct user interviews when needed, leverage VOC (Voice of Customer) and analyze behavioral data to understand how users navigate our services. Across departments, each team is conscious of our corporate values and refines the product through a consistent design process. We believe this is the reason behind the trust we have gained as number one in app downloads for seven consecutive years.
We spoke with Ginji Taguchi, Product Management Group, Development & AI Division at Coincheck, Inc. to explore how our vision, “Making the exchange of new values more accessible,” is linked with front-line systems and team diversity to create a distinctive UI/UX.
Lowering barriers through simplicity—a design that minimizes hesitation
Crypto assets are attractive because significant price volatility can create investment opportunities. At the same time, the field is filled with technical terminology, and many people—particularly those unfamiliar with investing—often say, “I’m interested, but it’s hard to take the first step.” We assume Coincheck will be the first point of contact with crypto assets for many users. We also expect that some customers who once tried crypto trading elsewhere and then dropped off may return to the market through Coincheck. Ensuring users do not hesitate at that first step is, in our view, part of our role as an industry-leading company. That is why UI/UX is a top management priority.
As a result, the Coincheck app has been recognized as number one in downloads for seven consecutive years. Yet what we provide is not flashy functionality. Rather, it is the steady accumulation of sincere, logical design that communicates clearly to avoid misunderstanding.
When dealing with assets that are inherently difficult to grasp, UI/UX should be more than an operating screen—it should serve as an honest interface that enables users to make decisions with confidence. Users should naturally understand, “What am I doing right now?” and “What should I do next?” And through the app, we also aim to create moments of excitement and anticipation. We believe continuous refinement in these areas is directly linked to customer trust.

Re-examining “the obvious”—pursuing objective usability through diverse perspectives
This is a domain that demands advanced expertise. At the same time, one of Coincheck’s strengths lies in deliberately re-examining what is considered “standard practice” in the financial industry. Our team includes members with varying levels of familiarity with crypto assets. As someone who did not come from the financial industry, I often play the role of putting discomfort into words—for example, by asking, “Will this screen make sense to first-time users?”
Behind our ability to pursue clarity is a strong internal commitment to diversity—respecting perspectives beyond traditional financial-industry experience, and ensuring those voices are supported. We also maintain a wide range of internal documentation, and by promoting the internal use of generative AI, we have accelerated comprehension across teams. Even for highly complex specifications, we aim to use these resources to reach the most appropriate design. This willingness to absorb diverse input and an organizational structure and awareness that promote efficiency support both the speed and quality of cross-departmental projects. Because our rigorous pursuit of clarity goes beyond a closed team of specialists and incorporates diverse viewpoints, we are able to create a customer experience that is open to everyone.
Driving to the root cause through data and dialogue
Keeping an app simple is, in reality, a continuous series of difficult trade-offs—deciding what to remove. We address concerns such as, “Would it be unfriendly not to include this?” not through personal opinions, but through logic.
For example, we leverage VOC, conduct user interviews, and identify issues using quantitative analytical tools. Through these efforts, we work to understand what the real insight is—what problem we truly need to solve. To pursue even greater clarity, we collaborate with multiple professional functions to ensure legal requirements and safety while designing flows that users can understand via the shortest possible path. This process is also the pathway to fulfilling our corporate philosophy—“Making the exchange of new values more accessible.”
Cross-departmental collaboration ensures safe, secure user journeys
Behind simplicity, we also embed mechanisms that protect users’ psychological safety.
Crypto markets can be highly volatile, and the volume of information can easily overwhelm beginners. For that reason, Coincheck intentionally avoids presenting overly complex charts and excessive market data at the initial touchpoints. Instead, we use an approachable, reassuring visual design to encourage users to think, “I’d like to try crypto assets.”
We also avoid overly dense on-screen writing that users may find difficult to understand, while emphasizing a purchase experience where users can intuitively grasp what actions to take.
This seamlessness—and the secure user journeys we provide—are made possible because the value of integrity is deeply embedded across the organization and translated into the way we design our business operations. Even as each team demonstrates its expertise, we maintain an environment where people can exchange opinions on equal footing. We believe this company culture is the core source of Coincheck’s competitiveness.
Toward a future where design presents “new values”
I deeply resonate with the concept of “career ownership”—the idea of designing one’s own life and career to truly shine.
Going forward, building on the foundation of safety, security, and simplicity, I want to incorporate more design elements that bring excitement.
Blockchain technology and NFTs (non-fungible tokens) have the potential to support individual activities and expand people’s choices in life. I feel strong hope for a world where such new values become more widespread. By delivering a UI/UX that is easy for anyone to use and also emotionally uplifting, we believe we can make crypto assets even more accessible and contribute to a society where more people can design their lives with greater freedom.
